Choose and Book
Choose and Book is an electronic referral system that enables patients to choose the hospital or clinic they wish to receive treatment at, and to book their first outpatient appointment.
When your GP recommends that you should see a specialist, a referral is created in Choose and Book. This generates a Unique Booking Reference Number (UBRN) and a shortlist of providers which offer the appropriate clinical service.
Choice is not limited to local providers: patients can choose from any hospital in England and some independent (private) hospitals also offer NHS appointments.
Your GP can discuss with you the appropriate options which are available for treating your condition and you may be able to book your appointment before you leave the surgery.
However, you may wish to consider your options further and an Appointment Request Summary can be printed for you to take away and book your appointment later. The paperwork will advise you how to book the appointment.
